Dublin City Enterprise News Talks To ... Eva Byrne, Architect & House Consultant

Dublin City Enterprise News Talks To ... Eva Byrne, Architect & House Consultant

Eva Byrne is an architect who created a new way of working as an architect when she launched her pioneering 2 hour house consultation service in 2005.

How did you decide to start your own business?
I had taken a complete break from work after the birth of my 2 children. When the younger of them started school, I felt ready to engage in the world of work again, but only during those hours when they were at school. Offering my expertise in 2 hour chunks allowed me to combine work and home in a way that suited me.

What was the reaction of your Family and Friends?
Family and friends were supportive. Some colleagues working in a more traditional vein were a little sceptical of the concept -it was a very busy time in the construction industry and working in such a small way seemed strange to some.

What was the greatest stumbling block?
Creating  an awareness of my service.

How did you overcome this?
I was very fortunate to be featured in the Irish Times property supplement in January 2005 as part of a feature on architects and builders. Half a page was devoted to my new service, including a large photo. This generated a year’s work and coverage in many other national newspapers.

How did you decide to contact DCEB and what supports have they given you?
I found myself in October 2009 with less work but with a huge appetite to build upon the experience I had gained since launching my service. I had an idea about a website I wanted to launch, about house design and about all the issues I had been dealing with. This led to my new website, www.houseology.ie. It’s a resource for those seeking to do work to their homes.

What was the most significant area of support you received?
For me, as a person who juggles work and family, the opportunity to focus once a month on issues relating to business development and to engage with other women facing similar challenges. I always come away from a meeting with fresh ideas.

What is the best thing about being your own boss?
Freedom, choices and control of my life.

What is the worst thing about being your own boss?
I have only ever wanted to work for myself so it’s hard to contemplate an alternative. Perhaps the lack of a fat pension at the end of it all………..?

What -if anything would you change about the way you set up your business?
I would have set aside time for business development from the start. I should have joined the DCEB network earlier!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In general terms, I would like to harness the knowledge and skills I have acquired in new ways and to bring my expertise to an ever widening audience.
