Dublin City Students Compete at Croke Park

Dublin City Students Compete at Croke Park

March 11th was ‘Judgement Day’ in Croke Park for student entrepreneurs from 14 secondary schools across the city.

Dublin City Student Enterprise Awards: City Final 2010

The winners in the senior category, which were announced by Dublin City Lord Mayor Cllr. Emer Costello, were from Muckross Park in Donnybrook. Their student enterprise, ‘Lebo,’ was run by Maeve Reidy, Louise McCarthy, Erica Duffy, Sophie Nolan and Elaine Caffrey, who each received a cash prize and a Dublin Crystal trophy.

In the intermediate section, the winners were from Loreto College on St. Stephen’s Green with ‘Scribble’ and Laura Doherty, Aisling Byrne, Kerrie Danaher and Claire O’Halloran were the student entrepreneurs involved.

The junior category winners also came from Loreto College on St. Stephen’s Green and were called: ‘Team Reflect,’ which was run by Ciara Barry, Gillian Fitzgibbon, Marguerite Mullan and Shannon Rock.

The category winners will go forward to represent Dublin City at the National Final of the Student Enterprise Awards, which will be held in Croke Park on April 27th, as part of the biggest competition of its kind for secondary schools in Ireland, organised by the network of County and City Enterprise Boards.

Other winners at the Dublin City Finals were:
•    Gaelcholaiste Reachrann (Donaghmede) for Best Display
•    Lauren Skelton of St. Dominick’s College who won the Judges Merit Award
•    Catholic University School who took home the ‘Margaret Farrell Award for Enterprise’.

Each student-run enterprise had to set up an exhibition display stand in Croke Park before being interviewed by a panel of experienced judges.  From a total of two hundred and fifty marks, the young entrepreneurs were marked on areas such as Business Performance, Market Research, Interview Skills, Finance, Risk Management, Innovation and Personal Development.

The Dublin City Enterprise Board also organised a demonstration of  www.businessgame.ie for students and teachers at the County Final.  The on-line business simulation game is a free educational resource, where students can finely tune their entrepreneurial skills for free, by running a virtual company.

The student with the highest score on Businessgame.ie by 30 April (coming from a registered school in Dublin City), will win a netbook kindly sponsored by Pat Walsh of Sky Business Centres.

Congratulations to all the winners at the Dublin City Student Enterprise County Final and best of luck at the National Finals later this month!
