Healthier Work Life Balance Tips

Deirdre Cronnelly of Afresh gave a very lively and interactive talk at the January Dublin City Enterprise Network for Women event, on how to kickstart the health side of your “wheel of life” through a healthier lifestyle.....

She focused in particular on the importance of diet in giving you the energy you need and avoiding slumps at crucial parts of the day. She explained how many of us experience a major slump during the day which can dramatically cut our productivity when we need it most. She believes that through a combination of a healthier diet and more exercise, we can wake up feeling more energetic and can make this last through the day. Some of her recommendations were as follows: - Daily diet should be made up of 55% carbs (especially fruit, vegetables and good “brown” carbs such as brown bread and brown rice” – these give sustained energy) - You need to drink a lot of water (8 glasses) to avoid dehydration – this brings down your energy level. Caffeine dehydrates so cut down or avoid. - Exercise should be done consciously – know what muscles you’re working (she did exercises to demonstrate this). - Steps you need to take for a more energetic you: 1) Set out what it is you want to achieve: More energy during the day? 2) Decide what you will do: Eat more fruit and veg and less “bad” carbs? Exercise every day? 3)Describe the steps you will need to take to make these changes. 4) Look at why you may have broken previous resolutions – what stopped you continuing? 5) Identify what you can do to make sure the same factors don’t stop you this time. 6) Decide when you’ll start your new regime? Put a timeframe on it. 7) Identify what it will cost you not to make this change? Give your opinion, in our Opinion Poll (bottom right hand corner).
