Adrian Birrell is from the Eastern Cape of South Africa, where he was introduced to cricket at a young age by his father Harry. Adrian achieved a Bachelor of Arts degree, an honours degree in Xhosa and a diploma in teaching. Then, utilising his Xhosa language, went on to develop cricket teams in the townships of Port Elizabeth.
He was chosen as Port Elizabeth’s Citizen of the Year in 1994 for his work with youth groups. In 1992 he coached the Under 19 South African team while simultaneously playing 45 matches for Eastern Province.
Adrian became the Irish National Coach in April 2002 driving the team’s unprecedented success and achieving wins against Zimbabwe, The West Indies and Surrey County Cricket Club to name but a few. The Irish team went on to become the Associate Champions, beating Kenya. They qualified for the 2007 World Cup where they tied with Zimbabwe and beat Pakistan, resulting in the team being positioned in the super 8 stage of the competition. This amazing achievement will go down in World Cup history. The team proceeded to defeat Bangladesh, thus being ranked in the top ten world ranking for one day cricket.
The two rival cricketers were talking:
“The local team wants me to play for them very badly.”
“Well, you're just the man for the job.”
