To get you started, here are some tips for effective marketing that don’t cost the earth!

1: Get the Details Right: If you’re spending your marketing budget trying to capture new customers, make sure they can find your contact details easily. Why not contact all the Irish-based directory enquiries companies (eg 11890, 11811, 11850) to make sure they have your correct contact details? Make sure you contact the Golden Pages and other directory companies, to make sure your listing with them is up-to-date too (especially if you have moved addresses recently).

2: Be Innovative: Look for some unconventional marketing methods your competitors are overlooking. You may discover some highly profitable ways to generate sales and avoid competition. For example, print your most effective small ad on a postcard and mail it to potential customers in your target market. A small ad on a postcard can drive a high volume of traffic to your website or generate a flood of sales leads for a very small cost.

3. Rethink Your Advertising: Reduce the size of your ads so you can run more ads for the same cost. You may even be surprised to find that some of your smaller sized ads generate a better response than their longer versions, especially if you have a strong headline or ‘call to action’ to encourage a response. When you’re booking adverts, try to negotiate some editorial content in the same paper.

4. Set up Joint Promotions: Contact some non-competing businesses serving customers in your market. Offer to promote their products or services to your customers and ask them to do the same for your business. You can also run a joint competition or promotional offer, splitting the marketing costs between both companies.

5. Make the Most of Your Customers: Your customers already know and trust you. It's easier to get more business from them than to get any business from somebody who never bought from you. Take advantage of this by creating some special deals just for your existing customers and announce new products and services to them before you announce them to the general market. And finally, convert your customers into sales people. Develop an incentive for them to tell friends and contacts about the value of your products or services. An endorsement from a satisfied customer is more effective than any amount of advertising - and it is much cheaper!
