Online Sales Boom in spite of Downturn

Irish consumers are spending around €12 million per day on internet shopping despite the economic downturn, according to Dublin e-commerce firm Magico.ie.

In fact, the economic downturn may be driving consumers more towards online shopping and away from the high street, according to Magico.ie's director of ecommerce, Paul McGurran. McGurran cited research from Realex Payments which showed that peak online sales in Ireland reached €12.7 million on 4 December last year, declining to €7.3 million in subsequent days during the Christmas period.

However, in 2008 average daily web sales in Ireland are now exceeding €12 million per day. "Although traditional high-street retail activity is suffering a downturn, internet sales in Ireland are likely to smash all previous records this year as more and more drop the high street for the super information highway," said McGurran. He also noted that recent research in the UK showed that online sales will continue to grow and the web will claim more than half of the retail marketplace by 2026.
