Using Social Media to grow your Business

Social media provides small businesses with a really valuable means of marketing their business and building up connections with potential and existing customers. However, it is important to plan your engagement carefully to avoid wasting effort as there are now so many media and approaches to choose from and one size doesn’t fit all. We’re delighted to have one of Ireland’s leading social media experts, Helen Shaw of Athena Media as the speaker at our April event to throw some light on what the options are and what works best. Helen will talk about running her own business and give a sense of how the media work and how social media is changing things

Helen Shaw, MD and Founder of Athena Media
Helen
Shaw is MD and founder of Athena Media which is a digital media production and
consultancy company based in Dublin. She set up the company in September 2003 and
its client list includes RTÉ, BBC, Setanta Ireland, Newstalk, 02, Vhi
healthcare, UCD, the Irish Times and IBEC. She is an honours graduate of both
UCD and DCU and was a visiting Fellow at Harvard University for the year
2002-2003. She is a published author and presents regularly at international
conferences and events on topics relating to global media and digital media.
Her company creates documentary content for broadcasters and Helen is an
award-winning journalist and producer. She launched Podcasting Ireland in 2006
and began Athena Media Training in 2009 and through Athena Media Training she
provides social media and online content training and support for clients
including the Irish Times. Helen is a former MD of RTÉ Radio and prior to that
was a news editor with BBC Northern Ireland. She started her career with the
Irish Times as a print journalist and worked in the Belfast bureau during the
1980s before joining RTE as a current affairs radio producer. Athena
Media is currently producing a new eight part radio show ‘The Media Show’ which
starts on April 14th at 7.30pm on RTÉ Radio 1.

Women In Business networks from Fingal, Dublin City and Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Enterprise Boards and the Dublin Chamber of Commerce’s “Mentoring for Female Entrepreneurs programme” are joining forces for the third consecutive year to organise a major event for women in business in Dublin to celebrate International Women’s Day. Over 200 female entrepreneurs and business women have attended in previous years, making this an outstanding networking opportunity.
This year’s event will feature talks by Minister of State for European Affairs Lucinda Creighton TD and by Vodafone HR Director Rachel Mooney and presentations from a panel of four inspirational entrepreneurs who have expanded their businesses in recent years: Grainne Barry, Anotherfriend.com, Lauren Fisher, Simply Zesty, Jacquie Marsh, The Butler's Pantry and Ruth Monaghan. Appassionata Flowers. The Master of Ceremonies will be Joanne Hession, QED Training. This year, we will also offer limited mentoring slots from 5-6pm, bookable in advance.

Sales is often one of the most challenging activities for entrepreneurs and yet it is a crucial area for all entrepreneurs if they want to grow their business. At our February event, experienced sales and market research professional Fiona Macrae of Market Dynamics will talk about how, while there is no silver bullet, putting an effective sales process in place can make a big difference. She will share tips on some simple changes that you can make to improve your outcomes. She will also point out the importance of getting your communication methods right.

Fiona Macrae has worked in the international market research industry since joining Romtec PLC (now Harris International) in 1990 as a market analyst. In 1993 she moved to IDC as an analyst, becoming Programme Manager for European PC research. In her role as lead PC analyst Fiona was often quoted in both the IT and business press including the Wall Street Journal Europe and Financial Times. In 1997 Fiona joined the account management team at IDC and rose to the position of Global Account Director a role which included the management of one of the European major account teams. In 2003 Fiona moved to Ireland and co-founded Market Dynamics to provide research and consultancy services in Ireland and the UK. Additionally she works with IDC providing account management and consultancy to key accounts in Ireland. She is a regular speaker at events and also acts as a sales and marketing trainer, advisor and mentor to a number of organisations in Ireland. Fiona has a BA honours degree from Liverpool University. |
